Welcome to the web home of Tallgrass Christian Camp! Maybe you didn't know, but Tallgrass is "the happenin' thing" among churches of Christ in the greater Kansas City area. About 12 churches have been working together for the last four years on a joint christian camp development effort. For the last two years, we have concentrated our efforts on developing 156 acres of restored tallgrass prairie, just NW of Harveyville, Kansas, currently owned by Bill Carriger, one of the shepherds at the Central
church in Topeka. The camp board of directors has been conducting a fund raising campaign, and has so far raised $277,384 for development of the Tallgrass property. We've broken ground and made good progress this last year on the first building of the camp: the Main Lodge/Retreat Center. This lodge, scheduled for completion this Fall (2006), will be a two story, four season, log structure which will sleep 50, seat 200 (main room), and feed 120 (dining area and kitchen). After the lodge, we plan to build 4-6 cabins, which will sleep 12-24 campers each. The picture on the left, from June 2, 2005, was one of the first we took of the construction. It shows the main lodge
foundation walls, as well as the view that we'll have from the lodge, of what Tallgrass Christian Camp is destined to be known for (besides spiritual growth): Beautiful Tallgrass Prairie. There's over 100 acres of it! The picture below that shows our most recent development, the installation of windows in a building that is getting close to being finished, at least on the outside. God has certainly blessed our work so far. By our count, there are 500-600 kids in the churches of Christ in eastern Kansas and western Missouri (this is just the churches who are participating in Tallgrass already), who attend camp at various rented facilities, and who are now waiting anxiously to see our new camp facility become ready to use. As early as Summer 2007 we'll be establishing our own Tallgrass camp traditions! And Tallgrass has already been chosen to host the National
Association of Christian Camping (www.naccamps.org) annual workshop in 2010.
